1976 85hp Johnson wont start

i have replaced the power pack. i was getting a pulsating power from the stator to the brown wire on the power pack and that was the only power coming in or out of the pack, so i replaced it. now i have no power coming from the brown wire and the pack is grounded on every wire for some reason. is my stator bad or can it be something else? how does the ignition system actually work? i dont have the kill wire hooked up or the ground to the ignition instead i have a new universal ignition. i used to get an occasional spark but now nothing.
