    Default 1975 Johnson Stinger

    I am in possesion of a new in the box johnson 75 stinger short shaft. I have no intention of selling this engine. I would however like to find out what the market value of said engine would be? Anyone know how i could find out?

    Because it is still in the box, I don't know what the value is today, but you mentioned you want to use it. Once you start using it, the value will be the same as any other used 1975 Johnson Stinger. Since you know the motor is new, it is worth more to you than the price someone else would pay for it.

    To be honest, I don't know what kind of shape the internals are. I mean it was stored for over 30 years. It has been kept dry though. I was hoping to hear of a web based apraiser or something like that. If it isn't worth much i would have no problem putting it to use. But as you stated i would hate to use it then find out it was worth more than i would have paid for it.

    Old outboards--even antique outboards are not like classic or antique cars. They do not usually hold value or increase--unless it is the first Evinrude ever made or something unique like that.

    Since almost NO hulls are made today of a size to use that engine with a 15 inch transom, the engine's value is not much except to someone who is restoring an old 15 inch transom boat, an Evinrude collector, or someone who wishes to use a jackplate.

    If it is indeed brand new--never used, don't use it, and try for a collector sale. Otherwise, if it has been lightly run and stored, use it yourself if you have an application for it.

    Well thank you sir for your time and advice. I never really thought of it as an antique but suppose it is. I guess I will hold onto it for a while more. I'm really not enthused with the thought of having to tear it down anyway.

Obviously the engine was made for an older boat. I mean it was built in 1975. I just thought someone in a boating forum could help me with my question. Thanks a bunch anyway.

    it is probably worth $200 more than a used outboard, that vintage. most $1000.

    i would remove the spark plugs, turn the flywheel, by hand, all the way thru, all 4 cycles, if not resistance, i would put it into service.

    you will have to do some things to it. all rubber hoses will have to be replaced with alcohol resistant fuel lines, impeller replaced since it is rubber.

    the wiring should be ok, but insulation could be brittle. i would use 25:1 oil mix for the first couple of tanks of fuel.
    cross your fingers the coils have not dried out and cracked.

    Given market liquidity approaching zero, it's worth whatever someone's willing to offer. I raced the equivalent Evinrude for 9 years, still hold the EP record in APBA. How did you get the motor? Let me know if you decide to part with it. I have enough parts in my garage to build a powerhead and gearcase.

    Would run on any 13-14' V-bottom Allison built 1972-1985, and on any SE tunnel made 1980-1990. Ca. 1989 the motor was superceded by a 56 cu. in. "60" (hp measured at the propshaft, was actually about 90 hp at the powerhead). Those motors also are hard to find. From 1975-1985 good used Stingers/Hustlers sold for $1000 and were plentiful. I bought, rebuilt and sold quite a few. today, they're hard to find. They exist in older former racers' garages from S.C. to Texas but are not on the market.

    Evinrude Hustler 75/Johnson Stinger 75. This is an old post but the answers given are not the best. First, the motor is a 'classic', not an antique. Antiques were made prior to 1950 and look like plumbing, classics run about 1950-2000. The OMC 75 was raced 1975-about 1986, then was replaced by a 56.6 c.i. model. There are a lot of these motors around but they're in some old racer's garage, not advertised for sale. I just paid $350 for a 1979 model with ruined block, the kid had bought it, never run it, and wanted out of it. Fortunately, I have a block. The idea of (average or most probable) 'value' is not meaningful because there's too little demand. I would pay $1000 for one in perfect shape (nothing worn out except waterpump, block has not been rebored, or honed more than +.0025" oversize-more than that generally requires reboring). The racing class became defunct around 1988, and AOMCI members don't know the motor well enough to want to collect it, that's why the demand is nearly zero. I raced the motor 1977-85. My 19 yr. old son saw an old 14' Allison I once drove and 'had' to have it so we found a motor to go with it. Parts are readily available for this motor, as they are for any OMC 1968-2000.

    The motor was made for racing and was run 21" and higher. Minimum on any lightweight boat would be 19", not 15". The Allison raceboats, for shortshaft, came with a 21" transom height. I run my 1983 Johnson 35 shortshaft at 19-19.5" on my 15' 350 lb Allison bass boat.

    Hello,
    I have a 1976 model and wondered what popeller you would recommend for a very heavy boat (500kg). My boat takes for ever to come out of the water . I posted in 2009 http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/johnson-75-hp-slow-pick-up-power-316952.html but never really found the right prop or why it was so slow at first.
    I gave up and put a 60hp johnson instead. But I would like to get the 75hp up an d running again so any advice would be appreciated.
