    Default 1973 Evinrude 4 H.P. New owner

    Model 4336C Serial # E0003937
I bought this motor to go on a 10' Livingston for my kids to play with this summer. Runs full throttle well, but doesn't troll well (speed varies and eventually dies at marginal slow speed). I've done the obvious... new gas, new plugs, but the problem is still there. What is my next step? Ignition or carburetor? On another topic, does anyone have an ownerÂ’s manual PDF or scan they would be willing to send? Haven't been able to locate one. Thanks for any and all advice. Jim

    Welcome to iboats!

Jim, due to copy write constraints, you won't find a pdf manual. Your best bet is to find a OEM factory manual.
If this is a new to you motor, the manual will walk you thru all aspects of service etc. Low idle problems can point to a clogged dirty carb. Remove carb, soak /clean parts in carb cleaner, followed with compressed air and install carb rebuild kit.
Using the service manual, remove flywheel and inspect ignition parts (coils-point sets-condensers) , replace coils if they are cracked. Clean and or replace point gap (.020) as necessary. Perform sync and link adjustment.
Again, with manual, drop lower unit and replace the water pump impeller. Drain and replace the lower unit lube while your at it. Make a note of all work done and dates of work performed. Parts for your motor are cheap and readily available. Johnnie/Rude twins are fine running motors, very dependable and easy to work on with simple tools. With proper care, that motor will probably out live you.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

Thanks for the welcome. This is a great forum! Sounds like a service manual might have all the info the owners manual will have. I was able to locate one of these those, and its on its way. Until now, the largest engine I've worked on is a Cox .049 (model airplane), so this will be an interesting challange for me. Thanks for the tips, I'll post my results.

I have one of these motors. I LIKE IT! Runs good and is very light.

On the fron the motor are two knobs. One is for high speed adjustment, the other is for idle adjustment.

Once you clean the carburetor, check for air leaks in the fuel feed etc.... run the motor at the rpm it is giving problem. Adjust the idle mixture (top knob I believe) until it runs right. Be sure you have the breather valve open on the gas can too. If it is closed / clogged, a vaccum can build up in the can and prevent the fuel pump from sucking gas to the carb.
