Default 1973 Evinrude 25 hp dies out when in slow throttle or shift position...

Like the subject says my evinrude dies out when i move the tiller from start spot to the shift or slow. Whenever I move it up to far it dies out. When I slowly move it to shift the rpms drop enough to allow me to shift just fine and it runs great at the fast setting. What could cause this and will it do harm to my engine?

Are you running on both cylinders?
The first thing you need to do is a couple of simple tests to determine the basic health of the engine. Do a compression and spark test.
The compression should be at least 100 psi and within 10% of each other.
The spark should jump at least a 1/4" air gap and be bright blue. If both of those are OK, it might be time to check the fuel system and overhaul the carb.

Yes it has good spark. Havent checked compression but will do that. I was thinking maybe a plugged low speed jet possibly.

I have a 72 18HP, pretty much the same motor though.

There is an adjustment screw you can use to adjust the throttle position / control lever....

Check out this diagram... see part # 89 /90

Go look at your motor and how the parts interact when you twist the throttle handle you'll see you can adjust the screw (mine is plastic) ... hope this makes sense to you.
