1972 Johnson 65 outboard sputters and stalls

Hey guys, I have an old 1972 Johnson 65 hp outbaord motor that is giving me trouble. When it is hooked up to the earmuffs with town water running through it, it works fine, but when I put it into the ocean (salt water) it starts to cough and sputter and then stalls.Any help would be great.ThanksGreg

You will need more description of the problem in order for the guys in here to be able to help. I have the same motor. I am no expert, but may be able to help. Does it cough and sputter when you start it up or when you put it in gear(put a load on it? Have you checked the fuel lines and air intakes for leaks/clogs? When is the last time the carbs were rebuilt? Is it coughing through the carbs or exhaust?

If you are talking about the idle you need to set it on the water as the back pressure on the water will lower it probably about 400 rpms.
