Please help. We just purchased a 1988 boat with a '72 johnson 65 hp. At first it wasn't going over 5 miles an hour. We fixed that problem and now the reverse is not going in reverse. it is going forward. please help.
You might want to tellus what you did to solve the first problem, as the two are probably related.Did you drop the lower unit?disconnect shift linkage?remove any screws from the lower unit?
this is a eletric shift and will stay in foward till cranked . there is 2 wires going to foot and they may be disconected . they are dk. green [nutral] and dark blue will be [reverse]. there will be a conector where they go in to the foot . papasage
we are encountering more problems with this boat. Now, it will not go forward or backwards and is just floating when we put it on the water. It will rev and the prop will spin at full force but will go nowhere. We have called all over but nobody can look at it.

How could the prop spin and the boat doesn't move? Do you actually see the prop spin? Might want to check the prop retainer or gears inside the lower unit.Good luck,
Port Charlotte FL but never the same since hurricane Charlie

Re: 1972 65hp johnson..goes forward in reverse
When troubleshooting keep in mind this is not an electric shift lower unit. It is hydro-electric. They are 2 very different things. To activate reverse, you must have power to both the green and blue wires. If you have neutral that means you have power to the green wire that activates the first solenoid. If you select reverse and it goes into forward then most likely you've lost power to both wires. No power to either wire means the unit is in forward.I take it to mean that you see the prop spinning very very slowly compared to engine rpms. It may be the hub is spun. Just stick your spare prop on to test.Good luck!
