I just acquired a 1969 4hp johnson sea horse, all seems ok with it except i am getting no spark at the plugs....where would your first place be to look? and second and so on. Thanks in advance.....
Fantastic little motor so don't give up. I've got a 71 Evinrude and I maintain a 73 Johnson for a buddy as well. Take a look at the top of this forum for "Top Secret File". Lots of good information to consider there. Get yourself a n OMC repair manual. Take a look here for parts break down and description. I think the solution will be to pull the flywheel and look at your points but follow the TSF and don't be afraid to ask more questions. Rick.
i'm also trying to figure out the recoil starter system...it was unwound and the previous owner said he just used the flywheel for starting. if anyone has info on that aspect

Well if your up to it I can tell you it is rather easy to take the rope and start winding it one revolution at a time until the recoil is loaded. I have done it myself for a turn or two. For tools you will need a stool. good lighting, scotch and an O ring pick to assist in moving the rope through the tight spots. You don't even have to remove the handle. To stop recoil from recoiling you just need to pinch it together. Don't share this method on the forum though as it could be viewed by some as an uncertified solution. LOL Rick.
