Default 1969 johnson idle screw no response

Cleaned out carb a million times on my 6hp johnson but no matter how far in or out i turn mixer knob still idles the same - runs with great power though. Has fixed main jet and one adjustable. I was thinking maybe left old packing nut in with new one so when its turned in alll the way still gets gas. Any ideas?

So, it doesn't idle? Turn the low speed needle valve clockwise until it seats lightly, then back it out counterclockwise 1 and 1/2 turns. that should allow the motor to idle but it can be fine tuned one way or the other from that point. While it's idling, turn the needle valve clockwise in 1/8th increments and watch/listen to the motor. When you reach a point where the motor "sneezes", stop and back the needle out about 1/8th turn (or so) and the motor should run good at idle.

with the float bowl off the carb body and the carb body inverted, do you see a small recessed brass piece with a hole in that serves as a passage up to the area the mixture needle extends into? if present, it'll be on the outer mating surface of the carb body ..that passage needs to be cleaned with a steel wire < stripped twist ties work >, do this slowly and with caution as you don't want to break the wire off in the passageway..if this passage isn't in this location look for any hole in the carb body/float bowl mating surface that isn't threaded for a bowl screw as this is a passage that needs to be clear

Motor has no response while turning screw, but she runs strong no sputters. She's getting gas somehow? Got three of the engines never had this prob. Guess rip carb apart again maybe missed something. Thanks
