1969 Evinrude 115 pulse pack/can I convert to MSD?
After checking through the forum a bit I decided to post typically I do as much reserch as possible before I ask a question that has been asked 1000 times but their is a bit of confusion for me so I am asking.
the situation
I purchased a 1969 Evinrude 115 to replace the 1980 Johnson 85 I had had to do with no power trim and an HP upgrade so I do a compression check and everything is around 125 so all is good their getting fuel no prob electric choke works well did all due diligence and ensured that all connections were secure and it was wired properly but when we went for the magical moment you guessed it nothing no fire... I had been warned about the temperamental black box and so after checking to see if their was power coming from the coil that was the first place I looked. wires were shot their was one that had clearly broken then another broke when we took it off. unfortunately the cleanly broken one broke at the epoxy line on the back of the box and the others are very brittle. I knew at that point I just spent 350 bucks on a new one. However I have been checking through the site and from my understanding people have come up with a work around for this by doing an MSD box and coil conversion? is this correct or have I misunderstood what I have read. thanks in advance

OK, I'll bite. What is a MSD box? If you have something that will replace the pulse pack, let us know. You are pretty much restricted to the way it was made in the first place.
Re: 1969 Evinrude 115 pulse pack/can I convert to MSD?
IMHO you should have kept the 1980 85 and looked around for a t/t system. That '69 has one bear of an ignition system. Plus a better lower unit on the '80.
Re: 1969 Evinrude 115 pulse pack/can I convert to MSD?
Ive used MSD's in everything from lawnmowers to race cars. I don't know too much about those old transistorized OMC units though. It would be easier as far as spark distribution if you were using a distributor ignition with the points or a aftermarket hall effect pickup as a trigger. Sometime I even want to convert my CD power pack system to use a distributor so I can use an MSD.
You know I just looked at your system Looks like it would convert pretty easily to use the MSD system. You have the distributor already. If you use the points as a trigger they would pretty much last forever as there is no condenser deal with. Switch over to an electronic trigger like one of the pertronix units and you could rev it up as high as you want.
Re: 1969 Evinrude 115 pulse pack/can I convert to MSD?
ok so currently what I have is the MSD 6al two coils and not sure how to wire things up to make it work big red and black to batt orange and black to coils small red to switched power and white to points but the problem is I have a stator pickup with two wires and not sure where white goes to get power to my coils also stator assembly is canx as plug wires are all corroded and need to know how to remove them
Re: 1969 Evinrude 115 pulse pack/can I convert to MSD?
Do a search on this forum. Ive done one before and there are several people who have MSD conversions on that 1969 type ignition system with descriptions and pictures. You ae not reinventing the wheel.. If I could figure out how to do it on the 81 system and stuff it under the cover with the bubble back I'd be all over it.

Any help would be great I found wiring explanation for the model with points however I have the stator/ sensor type and cannot find wiring diagram or instructions walleye season is fast approaching
