I believe the steam you see is exhaust,The motor running you should be able to put your hand on the head and it will be hot but not so it will burn you.

Those motors usually put out a healthy amount of water out of that exhaust tube when at idle. If it's just misting water and steam, I'd suspect a worn/broken bladed impeller and replace it... and the water should never be extremely hot. If the impeller was indeed replaced, perhaps the water tube wasn't inserted in the grommet on top of the water pump housing correctly, or pinched that grommet. Another source of the issue could be if the thermostat is stuck shut. You can just remove it and put it's cover back on to test... if more water comes out the port, and it's not hot, that's probably it and you just need a new thermostat... I'd replace that cover gasket too. Good luck!
It's almost beyond the point of bearable how torturous it is to try to have any dignity in being a Vikings fan..

    Good advice.

You should be able to hold your fingers on the top cylinder of the head for a three count without burning them. That's about 140 degrees.

Those engines did have an issue with the rubber exhaust tube that went from the mid section to the exterior of the mid section shroud. If they deteriorated, two things happen.

    1. The water flow out the exhaust (exhaust relief) port will be minimal.

    2. Exhaust will flow up into the top cowl area and choke the engine out.

The bad part is, that tube is no longer avialable.
