Default 1969 85hp evinrude What is that red stuff?

What is the red blob of stuff on the yellow wire in the picture. I am assuming it is a quick repair of some sort. Motor runs but I want to understand it better. Does anything look out of place on this motor? Butchered?

Also what is the black cylinder that is in the place of the amplifier? The pictures that I have seen have a square unit? Any help

Looks like a potted diode and the black thing is a coil, I've heard of them being used but never seen it. I have a 1970 and it has a square amplifier were that is so good luck if it ever breaks.

I'll bet its a whole lot cheaper, those square amplifiers are expensive. Anyone know of any downfalls of this frankenstein?

It's a 50/50 chance on that conversion. If it is working for you that's great. I never had much success doing it and have it last long. Have heard that some of the conversions worked great and lasted a long time.

wow...looks like the rectifier is stuck up where the coil should be....not sure what that cylinder thing is...first thought it was the starter mounted back there, but must serve as your powerpack. Not sure what those two wires clipped to that metal piece is suppose to be. I have a 1970 115hp evinrude and this doesn't look like anything remotely close. From the looks of it, the powerhead has good gold color. Maybe take those pieces off, put the electronics on that is suppose to be there and enjoy.

Wow...FR you have to throw your thoughts into this one!!

The round black thing is a ignition coil..automotive it looks like..the white square thing bottom left is the ballast resister...and under the red wrapping may be the diode....

the butt connectors should of been heat shrinked also...but it's sorta neat ..seen worse

I am having a weak spark on the bottom two cylinders. Where should I look first? Points? Coils? I like the setup I'm all for unique I just want to clean it up and have it run a little better. Can anyone give me a lesson on how this setup works? Also should I be using different plugs and wires or would they still be factory type.

i have a 70 85 hp and if its anything like mine and i believe it is, then yes it has points. start by popping the flywheel off and giving them a look and possibly cleaning. but know this: if the flywheel has never been off, its probably not going to be easy. it took me and another guy about an hour to get it off with a combination puller and moderate heat with a propane torch. theres only 1 coil, so if you are getting weak spark on ony 2 then thats probably ruled out. check the wires for cracking or freying, and check the plugs.

when i got mine it wouldnt fire at all. cleaned the points and she roared to life after sitting for a year and a half. she runs great, pushes my 16' starcraft with 3 adults 3 kids and gear to 35 all day long.

Well Having had a problem with my boat not firing the points (as of yet) and doing alot of research, I can tell yours has been converted. This IS an excellent system- that replaces the CDI ($300). I've heard they run excellent, or they don't run at all. From further research on this site. I have read you should be using a J4C type plug in place of originals they don't foul out as easy. Further Points gap should be set at .010. You will go through more points with this set-up as it is hotter across the points causing them to burn more. Points are about $65.00 a set last I checked. Keep them clean and gapped. Based on the original factory setting. The red "blob" is the diode pack- has to do with shifting according to schematic. The " Round thing is the coil, and the ceramic long thing next to the coil is a ballast resistor-helps control the coil under load and non-load conditions. This is the best Photo I have seen for this set up. There are alot of people trying to make this work. I wish there were a way to post this as a sticky. What do the rest of you think? Up until now you got weak spark on two cylinders did it run well or did you get it this way? Also the little triangular piece I think is the rectifier they are using this to make sure current only flows one direction startup to give maximum voltage to the start up on the coil... can you tell me where the yellow wire spliced into the red wire on triangular piece hooks into your harness its the only piece I cant see. Not firing hot on two cyliders.... check plugs and wires cap.

Forgot to add the flywheel has been off before as the points plate wires appear to be fresh as well.

The yellow spliced to red runs over to the starter +. The boat runs pretty well unless the battery is low. Not sure why this is. I don't think I am getting a proper charge. I had some trouble with it last time I had it out, didnt want to ide, just kept dying and didn't want to start(would crank and sputter but just wouldn't take off). Took it home and started to explore. replaced the plugs, ran some carb cleaner in it and then when that didn't help charged the battery. Now it idles without dying but I noticed that the spark is weak in the bottom two cylinders so I started asking questions. I had thought that the system was modified but wasn't sure until recently. I need to pull the flywheel and check the points. This will be a first for me so wish me luck. Hopefully will get it done in the next couple of days. I will say this thing hauls when it runs well.

I looked at the photograph and I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a condenser in line with your negative side of the coil without this it will not allow the coil to full force this may be why your not getting good performance when the battery gets low.

There is a condenser it is just hidden behind the ignition coil. Got the flywheel off and am adjusting the points. I will let everyone know how it goes.
