I have a 1969 55hp evinrude with the push button shifter....my ? is how many amps does this require.....it has quit working so i was thinking about using a rotary switch with the off-on-on positions.....its 10 amps max....will it work for this application ?...does anyone know this off hand...help would be greatly appreciated.
A 1969 55hp is a hydro-electric, not a selectric. The switch will operate differently. No power to either wire = Forward. Power to only green =Neutral. Power to both green and blue=Reverse.
If the switch is not physically broken, it can be carefully taken apart and cleaned up.
Port Charlotte FL but never the same since hurricane Charlie

Re: 1969 55hp evinrude selectric shift
We used to use the old push pull light switch to go around the control box. Use the type switch that has one position for the stern light only and then another position for the running lights and the stern light. And off naturally. With the switch pushed in you'll have no power which is forward. Pull out one position to get netural. Pull all the way out to get reverse.
The downside is that you'll have no neutral safety switch for start in gear protection. Very dangerous - be careful.
