    Default 1967 Johnson 60hp rich on one side

    model VXL-13A

    After running conditions:

    Port side plugs look perfect
    Starboard side upper #1 is dry black/rich, #2 is black/rich and somewhat wet even.
    After the 2nd time running, I noticed some of what looks to be milky gear oil in the tub.

    After warming up,it idles, but with a miss

    Why would the just the starboard side plugs run so rich?
    Carburetor, spark ???

    Would a decarb bring the compression up?

    And what seals would I need to replace on the lower unit?

    After sitting for over 10yrs
    Compression 72-74 psi.
    Cleaned carb n fuel pump
    New points (2) (timed by marks/ohm meter)
    Replaced coil that was leaking.
    Have not replaced the condenser/cap/rotor/wires, they look pretty good considering their age and the price for 'em nowadays.
    New plugs.
    Tensioned distributor belt.
    Checked synchronization

    The compresion is very low. I am suprised it even ran. If I were you I would try running sea foam through it. After sitting for so long the rings probalbly need to be freed up. Another thing you can do is first do a dry compression test. Then squirt some oil in the cylinders. test again. If your compresion goes drasticly up then you know your rings are either stock or broken. If the compresion does not go up then you have a blown head gasket.

    Sprayed some sea foam in the cyl's and retested compression. Might have gone up a cpl psi... took the head off the 1 3 cyls... head gasket looks good.

    I guess i should use real oil to retest compression...

    When it was running I took the spark plug wires off to see what effect... nothing seemed to change with the #3 cyl .. put a screwdriver between plug and wire and lots of spark.

    Taking off the other wires seemed to make it run rougher.
    Also, cleaned the carb again.

    Also checked the reed valves... they all seem to be in place etc.

    any suggestions???

    After setting the points with the marks and an ohm meter I checked them with a feeler gauge... they were WAY past .020...

    Then I set 'em to .020 with a gauge and this is what I got now via video

    Most likely unburnt fuel/oil. These motors are notorious for that. On my motor, it looks like a light gray, creamy milk.

    I'm not an old-school expert, but I've read MANY posts over the years from the experts that say your compression numbers are just fine. What matters is the relative difference between them. There should be no more than a 10% difference between cylinders and you're well within those specs.

    It sounds to me like your are having a fuel-related issue. Did you remove the carb and do a thorough cleaning? There are two fuel circuits: one for the starboard bank and one for the port bank cylinders. This really sounds to me like some gunk is still in there messing up the fuel flow to one of the cylinder banks.

    You should definitely replace the water pump impeller and seals since it has been sitting so long. They come in a kit and may be available here at iboats for your engine. Also, check the forum for a thread called "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard" for other information about what to do for your engine. Check and replace the lower unit oil as well.
