my newly aquired junker (needs a lot of work) has stopped me already on day 1. seems as though i have no spark out of the coil.there is power at both terminals on the coil which i think is odd. isnt 1 terminal positive and the other ground ? there labeled that way, yet there is power at both. the positive terminal has from what i assume is ignition power and the other goes into the distributor. tried with not like but similar coil with no change. any help would be appreciated, summer is coming!!! thank u
The fact that you have voltage at both terminals proves that the internal wiring of he coil is as it should be. Voltage is applied to the (+) terminal of the coil, travels through the internal wiring, then exits via the (-) terminal.
The negative (-) side of the coil does not go directly to ground (unless you have a desire to blow the coil up). That wire would connect to the ignition points. There may also be a "Gray" wire that would lead to a tachometer connection.
Let us know what you find.
Clean, then set the points so that on the high lobe, a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not.
Voltage on the negative terminal of the coil should cycle between battery voltage and zero, four times per revolution as the motor is turned over. If it doesn't, the points arent doing their job.
