Did the bottom drain screw have a phillips head or a slot head?

Yep, we know what you did---you removed the phillips head screw, didn't you? They made that a phillips head just exactly for that reason--it is Not the drain screw!!! Removing it allows the inner shift mechanism to fall apart. Good luck getting it back in. It is possible, but takes some finageling. Sometimes the parts will align if you turn the motor upside down. If they are almost but not quite aligned, grind or file a taper on the end of the screw, and poke the pointy end in the opening and rotate. That will pull the parts into alignment.

Hunker down and look up from below, just forward of the skeg. What do you see? Aha! The drain screw.

Leave it up to F_R to give away the ending......
Anyway John, don't feel too bad. You are the 257,675th person to take that screw out by mistake.

Thanks for the reply, but i already figured it out, and yes you are right, once the oil drained fully i could see it dropped a little, easy to get in once i lifted it slightly with a small nail, hands on, the best way to learn
when you make mistakes you dont forget them. thanks again im sure ill have more questions soon!!
