Default 1965 Johnson 40 Copper water tubes

I had the lower unit rebuilt for this engine. I've got it home now and for the life of me cannot figure out how the copper tubes fit up into the engine. I know they go into the round black grommets, but one of the tubes seems to be 5" longer than the other. Is it possible that they were installed wrong when I got the engine, or should one of the tubes insert farther than the other. The grommets are even at the bottom of the powerhead and at the water pump.DB

Both water tubes should be exactly the same length. The 5" longer one would be for a long shaft engine. If your engine is a short shaft engine, you would need two short tubes. If long shaft, two long tubes. Why you have one of each should be quite a story.

For a motor I found in a field where it had been sitting for some time, nothing suprises me. This motor is a 20" shaft, I would love to know where the longer tube was put before I removed the lower unit?DB

I don't know if a 40hp is much different from a 75hp but my water tubes are different lengths. The shorter one goes in the top of the water pump assembly and the longer tube extends down lower for the water inlet. You can see the longer one sticking out of the exhaust housing in this photo.

I got home and now it makes more sense, sort of. I see that the long tube will go into the water pickup and ends up being them same length as the copper tube on the starboard side of the motor. What about the grommmet on the port side by the water pump. Does it not hook up to anything? I know three pipes didn't come out of the motor. DB
