1964 Johnson Super Sea-Horse-spitting fuel, leaking oil from lower case

Model #VXL-13ASeriel # J283511560HPJust purchased this vintage boat and motor. Cranks right up but is spitting fuel and leaking sluddgy oil from lower unit. Is there a minor fix to get us in the water without further damage?

Those items may be normal for your particular unit.A slight amount of spitback out of carb(s) on some of the older motors might be considered normal operation. A lot of spitting and very poor or no ability to idle down well would indicate problems.If you are running the motor in the driveway and find some oily scum in the garbage can, or sooty oily residue dripping out the exhaust area during or after running, that might be normal.Change the oil in the lower unit and look for signs of water. If it has a reed (indicated by very bad spitting) problem or poor tuning it will even show more of the unburned fuel/oil in the exhaust residue.
