1964 Johnson starts, then stops. Will go if fuel sprayed into the carby
Hi there, I would really appreciate your help. Three weeks ago I ran my boat around the lake, the motor started, no problems (well, except for a slipping dog clutch which is now fixed).
Yesterday, I spent an hour trying to get the motor to start and it just won't go. If I spray some premixed 2-stroke fuel in the carburettor intake, close the choke and start it, it will kick over and then stop. If I do the same but keep squirting fuel mix in to the carby, it will continue to run but then stop as soon as I stop with the fuel.
I have checked the fuel line - there is fuel moving from the tank to the motor and as far as I can tell, into the carby. If I disconnect the fuel line leading in to the carby and squeeze the bulb or try to turn the motor over, fuel comes out.
It seems like a blockage somewhere but since I have no real knowledge of outboards carby's, I don't know where to start.

Usually folks skip the year.you did a good job there but we need hp .wouldn't hurt to know if electric start and or remote or tiller.
Does it pump gas in strong even pulses?
Its very likely the carb needs a rebuild and a good cleaning.
It is basically the same as any carb with a float.Depending on the motor its usually a pretty simple repair. If this motor has sat around a lot over the years the whole fuel system could be fouled up.

@steelspike in case you read this, it turned out to be the float in the carb bowl was stuck. All I did was undo the float bowl (4 screws), check it, made sure fuel was getting in there, then screw it up again. It's fixed. Perhaps I should get a new float.
