Well, working on my old boat tonight I decided to tackle the ignition switch wiring. Following the existing wiring and equipment I replaced the current 3 prong starter (Batt, Ign, Sol) then wired two wires which existed on the previous switch to same terminals.
Nothing. No clicking, no ignition nothing
So, fussed and farted around and changed the wires to different terminals.
Hmm...running lights on ALL THE TIME and the engine/solenoid now clicks when the key is turned.
What makes this all the more fun is every wire in there is white!
Am I close? Any ideas? I'm thinking at this point of dropping off the boat to an expert and having them rewire it...
I like your last idea. You obviously don't have a clue what is required. In the first place if you are speaking of the key switch when you say 3 prong, you have the wrong key switch. Messing around and trying to use the wrong switch will make a magneto coil explode--literally. Furthermore, the running lights should not be connected to the motor's wiring at all.

Well if I did I probably wouldn't have posted my question on the forums now would I? But thank you for both the magneto warning as well as stating the obvious.
