1960 johnson 18hp carb rebuild

Hello guys im new to iboats but it looks like this is the place to be if your a boat owner. My question is i just got this boat and engine from a friend of mine and have no history on it on how it runs or when was the last time it did. I am going to start with a carb rebuild and then a compression and followed up with a ignition test. If anyone could help guide me to the place to pick one up and also on if this sounds like a good direction to go with on testing well thank you and have a nice day.

It's always good to start off with a compression test and spark test before sinking any money into an outboard motor.

You can borrow a compression tester for free at Autozone or Oreillys auto part stores. Also, pickup a spark tester for $6-7.

Agreed, check the money pits first. Compression and a general visual first, ignition second. I say go one step further. Not just a spark test but pull the flywheel for a looksee. No point in working on it till you find out whether or not it is worth it. Especially of that vintage where they almost certainly have cracked coils if they haven't already been replaced. And a large percentage of those old motors have been screwed up by unknowledgeable people working on them----look out for battered keyways and flywheel tapers = makes for junk.
