Default 1960 75 HP Evinrude O/B startup after 10 years...

Well, first off I am new to the forums! So this is a good time to say hi =) I recieved a 1960 75 HP Evinrude O/B, from a cousin and would like to start it up and use it for my boat. The motor has not run in 10 years. When my cousin had the motor he went through it a litle bit and ended up finding a mouse nest inside one of the Jugs. Is that even possible for a mouse to get into a Jug?...well anyways he cleaned out the nest, and honed the Cylinder out, then reassembled the heads, with same gaskets. As far as I know know the motor in general has not been touched since 1994 (10 years), nor has it seen water. My biggest concern is what precautions/precedures should I perform before trying to crank it over? I purchased a manual (Seloc brand by Chiltons). I am sort of a newbie to O/B's in general. I would greatly appreciate it if you all could give me some advice on what I should do =) Do the muffs work for water?..or do I need a 55 gallon drum? Also, where is the best places to purchase parts/accessories for my O/B? Thank you in advance for the advice! Much appreciated.

Here's a list of must do's.1. Change the water pump.2. Rebuild the carburetors.3. Spray a lubricant into the cylinders.4. Change the lower unit lube.I prefer the 55 gallon drum, if you can do it.

You will have to use a drum to put it in because you can't get the muffs to seat on the water intake. The intake is to close to cavation plate. Also make sure you have a good strong battery. Those old war horses take a lot of juice to turn over.

Gumli, I'm about to do the exact same thing you are doing and on the exact same motor your working on. DJ what kind of lube do you reccomend for the cylinders? some light oil maybe? or something like WD40?Is this motor interference? Just wondering since I've never dealt with a V model outboard and I totally didn't even think about a timing belt.

Well we are in the same boat Azn. Hehe. I will be posting some updates and pics here if anyone is interested and hopefully I can get some opinions. I pulled the plugs out, and I found a mouse nest inside. So I had to pull off both heads. I got the heads off and I can see very small/fine gouges. Obviously the mixtures before of fuel were not correct and gouged the walls up. Here is a pic. Do you think I would loose a lot of compression? ...I was hoping not to have to hone the walls down and go with oversized rings. You can sort of see the gouges on the walls there, and the pistons need to be cleaned up a bit. How bad would you rate these? I am leaning towards just cleaning it all up then compression testing, and if not a big difference, go with it. More pics to come, once I have some decent wheather. Thanks!Edit: Does anyone know what the compression is for a 1960 Evinrude 75 hp 4 cyl. Model#: 50523my manual does not give it.

Your plan is sound to me. If the compression isn't so hot you can decide whether or not you want to dump some money into it.
