Default 1959 evinrude starflite 50 hp w/ electric start

I need some help with my 1959 Evinrude it has electric start but the wires from the key ingnition all the way to the motor is shot and i didnt want to spend a whole lot of money on a bunch of wires.I was thinking you could wire it like you do a lawn mower by just killing the ingnition with a toggle switch but like i said i dont know much about the old motors. i want to eventually put the correct harness on there but not just yet.

    can some one help?

    thanks

All you need is one wire from your pos battery cable to an aftermarket ignition switch, then routed to your solenoid. Look at how the old wires were hooked up and copy the configuration.

There is a black wire that runs from the terminal on the side of the magneto to the ignition switch. Grounding that wire stops the motor. That's what the proper switch does, ground the wire in the "off" position. Do not use a car switch, it will destroy the ignition coil which must be made of gold wires, according to the price.

You can use a push button switch to start it and a toggle switch for on and off. Wire at own risk!!
