    Default 1959 Evinrude Sportwin 10HP

Hi guys, I was wondering if I could get some advice on a few things regarding this engine.

    1) Probably a really stupid question. But I just recently bought this motor and really have no clue as to how to service it. I winterized it by spraying fogging oil into the carb, opened up the drain valve at the bottom and drained out whatever fluid was in there. Now, do I have to refill the lower end with new oil before I bring it back out again?

    2) The gear shifter was broken off during a slight accident when the motor fell on the ground (yeah I know). My question is, does the spring loaded control arm that is attached to the shifter at the side (the rachet like device) actually acts as a clutch of some type, or is it simply to a) slide the gear into the correct position (neutral, forward & reverse), and to prevent the engine from over revving?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. I dunno, what is in there now? Has it ever been checked/changed? If in doubt, drain and refill it. That motor cannot stand running with water in the gear oil (or low/no oil).

    2. The shifter lock serves as a detent to make it have some "feel" when you shift. It also has a slight effect in holding it in gear. It also serves as a throttle limiter when in neutral and reverse. It also defines the "start" position. With shift in neutral, twist throttle toward fast as far as it will go. It will only go so far in neutral. That is the start positon.

Hey, thanks a lot for replying Sir.

When I took the drain plug off, only a minuscule amount of oil came out (some water as well from what I could see). I bought this motor from a guy who bought it off of someone else (came with a small 14ft. fiberglass boat). I really have no idea as to what kind of maintenance the motor has received over time (judging by the appearance and the fact that the motor would not start I would have to say it had been standing for quite some time).

I cleaned up the spark plugs and did some other maintenance to the motor and tank (has one of those air/fuel systems) and eventually got it to start (in my water tank). It now runs quite smoothly and seems to work well (that is until it fell on the ground when taking it into my basement..)

So, looking around on the internet (and this site), I have learned that I should fill up the gear box with gear oil (from the bottom hole). Any other tips for this motor?

I also made a new handle, which has a little spike at the end that locks it into place on the guide. Seems to work quite nicely (I will post a picture when I have some more time).

That's pretty much it for now.. I will spend the winter restoring it (including painting, etc).
