Default Honda 9.9 4 stroke - Battery charging problem

Hi, I have a Honda 9.9 4 stroke outboard.Since the battery went completely down because there was strong current absorbtion (~ 8 Amps for 20 hours), I noticed that when the battery is down or disconnected the engine charger is not working: is this normal or the rectifier is not working properly? For other outboards, when the battery is disconnected, I am still able to read around 14 Volts between the wires coming out from the rectifier. Thanks for the help.Mimmo

That is normal. This system has to be connected to a battery to operate.
