75 Honda 4 Stroke

This is a 75HP Honda 4 Stroke, came in from fishing last weekend and noticed the temp. light was on, it was about dark have not noticed it before(not very bright) I check the pump was pumping fine new water pump in April of this year.The alarm buzzer was not on. The engine was not hot by touch, the next morning I cranked it and the light was still on as soon as it started running, so heat is not the problem, any suggestions will be appricated Jim

Bad temp sensor or a short to ground in the temp sensor wire.
