    Default 2011 Tohatsu 50hp TLDI

    I'm considering making some boat changes. Have a 2011 short shaft 50 now.

    One of the boat options is an Xpress HD16DB which has the 20 in transom.

    Before I even consider changing motors, is it feasible to change my short shaft motor into a long shaft? Cost?

    I think it very unlikely that you have a short shaft 50HP outboard now, mnormand.

    Please measure from the underside of the transom clamp to the AV plate. Let us know what you find.

    I bought this motor to put on this short 16" transom 1548 commercial Alweld I had made a few years ago.

    I might add that this boat worked very well, fast as heck for sure. but manageable. I also had a 40Merc 2stroke with a jack plate before that, that was terrible, squatted down badly, and that carb Merc hated to run in shallow drive. Removed jack plate later, and put a Yam25 2stroke. That worked pretty good, but was boring/mudane, too slow.


    Then later last year I had this 1948 custom made locally here in S Louisiana, very popular for all around hunting/fishing:

    This boat is turning out to be too much for me alone. Wife never fishes anymore, too hot, LOL.
    So I'm thinking hard of making some changes and looking at various options, which may mean selling the whole rig.

    This is one option.. Gheenoe LT25, with Tohatsu 25, center console.

    Also thinking about the Xpress HD16DB which has a 21" transom, and having it cut down to 16" to fit my Toh50, Lots of experienced boat welders here, done all the time. This is mud boat central here in S. Louisiana.

    It's hard to find a 1648 semiV hull by Xpress, Alweld, Weldbilt, etc that have a short transom these days. You used to be able to order these custom made, but that's changing.

    So that's the story!

    Not really. $600 in parts and three hours labor.

    My answers are like Zen...It may not be the answer you want, but it is generally the answer you need.

    The 3 Rules:

    1) Look in your service manual first...Then ask me if it is correct.
    2) Understand that your desire to repair your engine does not mean that you have the ability to do so.
    3) If you are confused, take your engine into a dealer..Then let them be confused...At least, in theory, they sent someone to outboard 101.

    Yup. I learned something today. I guess it is just unusual to have a 50HP with the short shaft.

    Thx guys, will consider all options, including keeping what I have, and getting a micro skiff.
