9.8 Mercury Model # 5455772 Need To know Year?

I have the same outboard but year is 72.The same model is 7.5,9.8 and 15 horsepower.It is easy to upgrade to 15 hp model and you really feel the difference.

Is this true? I always thought the 7.5 and the 9.8 were the same powerhead and leg - but the 15 was a differnt beast all together.<br /><br />How is the upgrade done? I have a '74 9.8.

There is a bolt that is stopping the throttle butterfly to open max at horizontal, take off the bolt (it is on the gas wire linkage right side of the motor when looking the carb air intake side) there are two bolts another is for the idle adjustment and another is for the wot, wot bolt is the first when looking from carb air intake side, take that off and you will have a 15 hp model.It only takes a few minutes and gives a nice power boost.Mine has been working without problems after taking that bolt off 2 years ago.
