lower unit plug plastic?

A friend has a 1976 merc 65hp and he says he boogered up the slot in the fill screw, because it is plastic. Did they use plastic screws back then?<br /><br /><br />thnx<br />mark

They are Stainless Steel. If you can remove it, replace it with a a S/S one.

If he actually got hold of a plastic screw on the side, it may have been the flushing screw. I imagine you could confuse the two, but as noted, both the fill screw at the bottom of the gearcase, and the vent screw on the side, are made of stainless.

my 75-850 had s.s.screws orig.. when replacing the screws don't forget NEW gaskets top vent & bottom fill,just an ounce of prevention..,
