HI guys, I know this may seem pretty dumb but I have had a mechanic look at my outboard and he has diagnosed the stator to be faulty. Can you guys tell me what the job of the stator is? many thanks....

Re: Merc 50hp stator

The stator lives under the flywheel and is made up of coils of wire and the flywheel has magnets in it. As the magnets fly passed the stator windings they generator an electric current in them. This current is fed to the ignition system power pack, rectified and used to charge a capacitor. When the power pack gets another signal, from the trigger, it discharges the capacitor into the igniton coil to produce a voltage of around 20,000 to 40,000 at the spark plug.

And that was today's lesson. Thank you all for coming. :)

Chris.............

there are also coils in that stator that are used for charging the batt.through a rectifier or on old mod. the stator is only used as a charging circ.for the batt.
