horsepower question

We are considering purchasing a 16 ft aluminum boat with a mariner motor. From what we can see on the motor its 20hp (stickers placed on cover). The seller claims its a 40 hp, the stickers were placed on there for a lake where the max hp was 20. We couldn't read the model number but the serial number is 689-411239, it's apparently a 1984 model. Can anyone tell the horsepower from the serial number? Thank you in advance

Re: horsepower question

6E9-407936 - 6E9-411859 = 1983 40 HP Model

If that "8" in the "689" number is really an "E" it is indeed a 40 HP. Have a closer look at the number/letter. Bet it's an "E". The 20 HP does not come close to those numbers. Many fisherman change the stickers to do just that...

Re: horsepower question

Thanks so much for your help. We'll have to double check the serial number. I don't know how to double check the weight. Is it listed on the motor?

Re: horsepower question

Here's a test. A 40hp will pick up a light person on 2 skis. A 20hp will drag him through the water all day. :D

-W

Re: horsepower question

What made us wonder, it that above the serial number is a little plate and it looks like it says Mariner 20 (but is scratchy) and we thought it was the model numberand figured it was a 20 horsepower

Re: horsepower question

One other question, is it difficult to get parts for older Mariner models? Thanks again
