I have a 50HP Mercury 500 1970! WHOA, I know! Not very exciting, but would like to make it run. (Well it runs), but I don't like running it without water cooling the engine. Where do I begin!? I need the pump or impellor fixed?! Is that right!? I'd like to do this myself.. I guess I take off the bottom part of the motor, what do I look for, and do you think I need parts!? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks.

Start with a manual. It will save you a lot of head-scratching later. You will no doubt need at least an impeller, perhaps a water pump kit if the old housing and cup looks rough. But start with the book.

Go to www.oldmercs.com That's Bob Grubbs merc web site. Order yourself a parts manual. The parts manual will have blow ups of each section of the engine and it will show you how it go's together. Bob will also have an impeller for it.
