Tried to start(pull) in gear....now it won't go?

1982 35hp Johnson Seahorse longshaft outboard.<br />It ran all day yesterday without the hitch.When I went to start up today, I forgot to check to see if I was in neutral, and tried to start it....pulled it 3-4 times till the rope came loose....then I noticed I was in forward....flipped it to neutral....rope coiled up...checked everything...pulled and pulled to no avail.<br />left it for 2 hours....tried to start it again...seems to pull harder than usual??...I'm baffled....the old thing runs well...<br />Any thoughts/suggestions?

I should have mentioned that the problem is that it still won't start,yet has been working well previous to this.

watch the prop and make sure it shifted out of forward.

the prop was turning ever so slightly..<br /><br />the shifter seems to have been stuck?....I pulled it up and turned the prop by hand and it clicked into neutral for sure...fired up after a few pulls!....thanks
