Evinrude 25 tilt mechanism

This is likely a stupid question but I specialise in them so here goes.
What if anything is meant to hold a 72 Evinrude 25 in the fully tilted position? I know that you can adjust the "tilt tension" by tightening a nut but there is no way it is going to hold it up during the launch procedure down a ramp or even when pulled up on a sandy shore. There appears to be no locking mechanism on this engine? To overcome the problem I fabricated a piece of pvc pipe that sits between adjustable pin that controls engine position and the locking mechanism on the leg. It is still ugly though as this needs to be installed everytime I pull into a shallow beach by jumping over the side and slotting it in.

What gives?

sounds like the pin that locks it in the up position is missing, do you see a hole on the transom bracket up near the top of the transom?

Re: Evinrude 25 tilt mechanism

I'll check tonight, what holds the pin in place? I can't see anything on the exploded parts diagram but I did hear a rumour that this model didn't have a top locking mechanism but that wouldn't make any sense at all.

1972, Think it is a 25203R (at work, cant remember 100%). Looking at the BRP exploded view on their spare parts website I really can't see any locking mechanism for the engine at full tilt.

As I rember they didnt have a locking mechanism, that started in 1975 with the new block. Just tighten nut, there should be a friction washer between brackets, usually works fine.

Re: Evinrude 25 tilt mechanism

Hmmm, not good news! I want the tilt mechanism to be free so I can pull the beast up easily when coming back into the ramp off the water (would be a pain to be tight) but tight enough to sit in the fully tilted position when backing down the ramp (or up the ramp) without flipping down and smashing the skeg off the motor. I don't think that there is a happy medium. BUMMER!! Should have bought a later model motor with both tilt n trim and electric start! However this fella runs beautiful and when I pulled it down it looked brand new with zero internal corrosion.

My motor is a '55 25 horse, with of course the same problem. I want it to be free enough to tilt from inside the boat, but it won't stay up.

I deal with the problem by having a big loop of rope fixed to the boat. I just tilt the motor up and put the loop around the motor. It looks silly, but it works, and I don't have to get out to hold it there.

A loop of rope! Great idea... I'm used to looking silly at the best of times. Seriously, this was a serious design flaw and something that I should have picked up before I bought the boat. Chris that is a nice resto you have done there, many late nights no doubt. Note the interest in old cars as well. Went to a car show yesterday that would be a little different to those in the US. Organised mayhem might be the term to describe it. Plenty of old american iron on show and on the burnout strip. Check it out.
www.summernats.com.au Thanks for the advice as well. Not sure where you are from but hope you have got water at the moment and not ice. Not a problem here, it was 45 degrees celcius here the other day. Great day to be on the water.

Yep glenn, you Aussies have the exact opposite season as us Yanks. Here in 'Bama it was in the upper 30's (F) today and spitting snow.

Who cares how silly it looks. You ougtta see my old flatbottom. All beat up and leaks. With a fairly nice 8hp 1985 Johnson Seahorse on it.

Re: Evinrude 25 tilt mechanism

Guys,

I have access to another Evinrude 25 with model number 25502B C85584 (supplied by owner). I think the year is 75 by the first 6 characters but not sure what the last ones are?

Would the transom bracket part of this engine that I'm told has a tilt lock (according to owner) fit my engine?

Also if this engine has electric start would the flywheel etc fit my 1972?
