Question for our Prop Pros...

I just purchased a Renegade prop for my 1974 115hp Johnson (13 1/4 x 21) & the thrust bearing diameter I have is too big for the prop. Can I just go out & get a different bearing or is this telling me I can't use the prop. I think I was told it is for my motor but I don't remember

Thrust bushings can vary with the type of prop you have. If you bought the prop from a shop, they should know what size you need, at least my prop man did.

Re: Question for our Prop Pros...

Thank You! I was hoping I would get that answer! This prop is sweet & I push 43 + MPH (not even WOT) turning 6000 RPM w/a 13 1/4 x 17p aluminum prop. Looking forward to getting my rig running w/ the SST prop.

If you are turning 6k with a 13 x 17 aluminum prop, why did you go to a 13 x 21 SST prop?? That 17 pitch has you right where that motor needs to run. That 21 pitch may be to much for that motor.

Re: Question for our Prop Pros...

I was turning 6000 before WOT so I want a 21p to bring the RPM's to within 5000-5500 or so. This engine is rated to run between 4500-5500 RPM @ WOT

While the book may say it is rated to run 4500-5500, your target rpm should be 5800 minimum if you want the engine to last.

I believe a 13 x 19 SST prop would better suit your needs.. Should keep your RPM's right around 5700 - 5900 RPM.

It you were hitting 6k and not even hitting WOT, what RPM did your motor read at WOT????

Boy I wish I had that problem........

Re: Question for our Prop Pros...

I hear you, ddbyrd3. I just bought this boat, did minimal tune-up & restoration (paid 1500 & have maybe put 1000 in it) & it runs like it's in love with me!! WOT RPM with the set-up now is 6300-ish. I'm quite sure the tach is reading correctly, I have it set as Joe Reeves instructed so if it's a wrong read then the tach is bad. I went out yesterday, did a decarb & then opened it up & for some reason tach jumped to 7000. Thought I spun the hub somehow so I backed down & opened it up about 3/4 throttle & it pushed about 5700 so I think the prop is OK.

Just a thought, you may want to mark your hub and take it out for a test run. I did the same thing and realized my prop spun a 1/4 turn with in the hub.. Now its in the shop getting the hub replaced.

I run a 13 x 19 SST prop on my 140 Johnny and I dont see that RPM....

I am trully gealous.....

LOL. Sorry bro, just got lucky but I'll bet my luck is bound to change, as seen many times in these forums.
