I just rebuilt my 1978 115 Johnson and if its like mine the linkage is under the intake in the center . Mine had a alignment ? screw , you just use a long screwdriver and take screw out and its unhooked. The lower unit will drop some even with it hooked up but I wouldn't leave it hanging on the linkage you may bend the shift rod.

Yes, if its like mine under the carbs you shuold see the shift rod sticking up to the linkage . Its a little hard to see, if you have someone move the shifter a little you may see it move.

No, I thought it was easy. Make sure to remember which way the fins on impellar are turned ,and to put back the same way . I lubed everything and it slid together easily. While your in there look at the drive shaft seal, mine was bad and I changed it too.

Just a side not... On these older v4's there is also 8th bolt hiding under the trim tab housing. You have 6 bolts on the outside, one to remove the trim tab, and the 8th is in the underside (above and behind) where you pulled the trim tab off. And The shift linkage is under the carb behind the powerhead in a real tight spot.

Hope this helps.

yes, I got a 140 inch 8pt. last year. I hunt 60 plus days a year for deer and more than that for coyotes and bobcats.

Re: 1976 115 johnson lower unit removal

I have the same problem with getting the lower unit out of my 1978 115hp johnson. I have taken out the six bolts. Two on each side, one in front of the trin tab and one underneath the trim tab. I have unhooked the linkage under the carb. The unit does not drop out. I have wiggled it back and forth. I don't dare pry to much on it afraid the cast aluminum will break...

Any and all help is much appreciated...

Thanks, C

Captain. Tap it a couple of times with a RUBBER mallet. With all the bolts disconnected, it should drop out. We deal with this kind of problem all the time down here in Florida due to the salt water.

Mine has the hidden bolt. I had to hammer for a while(carefully) with a rubber mallet and a chunk of 2x4 till I could get it to budge. I also had 4 bolts broke off because of salt water corrosion.
