Motor turns over when trying to start, but not enough to start. Can positive jumper be attached to starter motor, negative to ground, to check starter. Can a jumper cable be used to bypass solonoid. Connections are all clean, battery is charged. Started a couple times about two weeks ago and ran well. Any help appreciated.

thanks,
Skip

Wrong forum, Skip.

Go to the Engine FAQ section and do the troubleshooting in the "Outboard wont start" article.

I will move this to Evinrude troubles.

Good luck. :)

Skip.... Yes, you can do what you mention above as a test. If the starter then cranks the engine over normally, then obviously there is a poor connection somewhere.

Motor turns over and starts when jumpers go directly to starter. Is there a progression to use in order to begin checkin for poor connections. Should the solonoid be bypassed before the process is started in order to ascertain that it is in good condition.

thanks,
Skip

Start at the battery and clean each and every cable end, battery post, solenoid post, solenoid to starter cable and posts. Then give her a try.
Should take all of 20 minutes to clean everything good.

IMHO, OMC solenoids often cause slow cranking. I don't know if they get dirty inside, or what.
