Evinrude needs choking

I recently acquired a 1974 4 hp Evinrude which has a remote tank. My problem is this: the motor starts and runs fine after about five or six starter rope pulls but in order to run I have to keep it about half choked. Adjusting the rich and lean valves does not help the problem. Do any of you fine people have any suggestions for me??
Thanks in advance-

Meaux

meaux,

You have carburetor problems-no doubt. It's time for a carb. rebuild. It's relatively easy.

If you have a cork float, replace it.

Ideas: fuel pump diaphram, clogged jet or dirty carb, air vent closed, bad hose connector. I've owned 4 of these (3hp & 4hp)motors...including a 74 model with the side throttle. Very easy carb to work on, pull the bowl and see what's inside.
