I have an Evinrude 6 hp motor. I'm not positive of the year, but think it's mid 70s vintage. I want to replace the water pump, impellar, but can't get the lower unit to drop. Through the upper/lower crack, I can see a coupling with two bolts. Is this what I losen? If it is, there doesn't seem to be enough room to fit in a wrench. Barely enough for a screw driver and then I can't break to bolts free. Appreciate any advice. Also, the serial no is J0003087, model is 6504R. Anyone tell what year this motor is.

Remove one of those bolts, that is the shift shaft coupler.

Be careful on that screw. I heard it is easy to strip when re-threading. I would suggest getting a repair manual.
