I have heard to use vaseline for lubing up new seawater pump impellers (rubber type). Is this correct? Anything else better? Worse?

2001 6.2 Bravo 1

Thanks guys. I think I'll go with the soap. I've got that handy and seems like less of a mess than the vaseline.

Shop was wrong.

QC, I have seen people ask this before, so I'll ask you, can't you just put the impeller on the shaft and twist it as you are pushing it back together? That is how my 1997 works. No need for lube or anything.

You don't want to use oil on rubber pieces. It will cause them to swell and break down.

Dish soap works great. That's what I used. Probably could force it in there, but with soap, it just goes right in.

That's my point, with two hands (even easier if the Mrs. holds the housing) it just turns right in, no "forcing" required. I just wondered if I was missing another point of all this "lube it up" mess?

Try it. You probably won't question it once you've done it.

No helpers required. Put a light coat of dish soap on the "fins" and you can slide it in there with one arm tied behind your back.

And twice on Sundays!
