The #3 cyl exhaust lobe on my cam is flat. Does anyone know if this can be repaired or does it have to be replaced? If replacement is my only option, where would I find one? I suppose as with everything else the automotive cam will not match up to the marine?
I looked on the Doug Russel marine page and it is not available there.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
RonB

I think it's a Volvo B23 engine B230 came out in '85
If so you can use either cam. If you mix and match you may need a spacer grommet between the head and valve cover. Also don't get a turbo cam, they are different. One problem is that the timing belt may keep breaking, at least I have seen this on the cars. I have tons of motors and heads if it's a Volvo. B230 is an improved B23. The B230 is balanced better and has a tougher bottom end. Am very experienced with the Volvo if it is one. Between my dad and I we have parted more cars than I can remember. Dozens of Volvos. I still drive one, and have built many motors. Have all factory tools and manuals still. The junkyard is also a good place to look, these motors usually never sell and can be had cheap. Most Volvos go to the scrapyard with a good motor. Between my dad and I we have over a century of hands on experience.
I found this post looking up info on an engine that is listed on e-bay with a bad coupler. Maybe you can steal it... BBB

hello,

no doubt about it, a cam with a flat lobe has to go. but i would want to know why it went flat. what is meant by "going flat" is that the lobe lost its case hardening and the lifter wore it down. but why?

if it were mine i would not just install a cam. id have to pull engine and bust it apart to ensure all oil holes open and spraying oil where it should be.

lifters are pressure fed, and the entire oil pan is a tsunami of an oil explosion inside the pan. oil is simply... everywhere.

i would want to know why it failed. it is not normal to just fail except if oil low, or high hours, miles...

BBB, it's a 2.3L Ford used by OMC. Not Volvo.
Besides that,
It's an OLD 2003 thread
