Hi Guys,
I replaced the alternator belt on my "89" 3.0 murcrusier but it rubs on the motor mount spacer. Does this mean that it is the wrong size or did I put it back together wrong? I didn't know the correct size so I measured the broken one but it may have been streached. The adjusting bolt slides about 3/4 of the way before the belt gets tight. Is that what it should do?

Re: Belt rubbing on mount

A picture would do wonders, but yes its entirely normal to adjust the sliding bolt 3/4 of the way in the channel to tighten the belt. However, I am having a tough time imagining how you would be rubbing on the bolt if the new belt fits in the pully guides. I just replaced both my alternators, and really can't picture how the belt would be rubbing on the spacer.

I kinda think I know what you are saying. that pushing the alternator 3/4 down the sliding adjuster sits it low enough its now contacting the engine mount. Check the other end of the adjusting bar mount thing where it is attached to the engine. On my mercruiser 230 there is another adjustment you can make at that end to raise or lower that end. That might help you out, or you need a belt an inch or 2 shorter.

Re: Belt rubbing on mount

From looking at the pictures, does anyone know why this belt is rubbing on the spacer?

I think maybe your belt is too short. the pulley on the water circulator pump is stationary as welll as the crankshaft pulley and so the only other variable is the moveable alternator bracket, so either bracket is in wrong unlikely but possible but more probable is your or belt is too short. Hope that helps

Hard to tell from te pictures, are you sure the spacer is in the proper direction. That flat spot on the top of the spacer probably goes down to clear the belt.

That spacer needs to come out either way to correct the orientation of the spacer or to replace the belt . Just make sure you support that engine mine moved just enough to make it a pain in the but to get the bolt spacers back in. Good luck

Re: Belt rubbing on mount

:)The longer belt worked. Thanks, I really appreciate the help. Now I have another problem. Sometimes, after I have been using the boat for a while, It won't start. It seems like it almosts starts but dosn't. The few times that it has happened, it started again the next day but all three times It happened I had to be towed back to my dock. The first 2 times I thought it might have something to do with the belt haveing been rubbing but it is still happening even after I fixed the problem with the belt. Most of the time it starts right up though. Anyone Know what the problem, could be?

You might want to start a new thread with your starting problem. Not many people will open a thread titled Belt Rubbing, expecting to troubleshoot a starting problem.

Re: Belt rubbing on mount

Looking at the top view picture the belt is running crooked as all heck. Are you sure the mounting for the alternator is correct? I have a 3.0, and the belt doesn't touch the mount thru the whole range of the adjuster. At any rate that belt isn't going to last too long. Unless it's just the picture creating the illusion that it's crooked.
