Was in process on changing the oil in my 98 Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke. The oil smells heavy of gas. I assume that this is not right. I had the motor worked on last summer after it had been laid on the "wrong" side during storage. Anys suggestions, is the is easy fix, or do I need to take it in to a mechanic?

Thanks

Re: Fuel in 4 stroke oil

If you idle your motor a lot or troll real slow, gas will get by the rings into the oil. I run my T9.9 at high RPM for a few minutes after a day of fishing, this way the motor has a chance to warm up and evaporate the gas residue. Pretty common problem in small 4 stroke engines. It only takes a quart of oil, jet in the habit of changing it after 40-50 hours of running.

Welcome to the wonderful world of 4 Stroke Outboards!

Lots of info about this.. search this forum for "making oil"

Also Google "Yahama making oil" - You will get lots of reading material regarding this problem!

Keep a close eye on the oil level rise on your dipstick!
