1987 70hp evinrude motor wont run

just bought boat rebuilt the carbs runs but not good? if you squeeze the gas primer when its running it seems to run ok. does anybody know what the little red switch is on the driver side of the motor? and what does it do? cause when i turn it, it seems to run alot better

It sounds like it is starved for fuel, which if you are running pre mix, means it's also starving the motor of oil as well.

Did you use a manual when rebuilding the carbs or did you just wing it?

When you rebuilt the carbs did you clean EVERY orifice out completely?

Are you sure the carb settings are correct?

the carbs are clean i took every thing out and clean the crap out of them? i did not have a book to go by so i just watched the video on youtube? but when i tun that red handle on the side of the motor it runs better? what does that do???

so i tryed to see if the fuel pump was pumping and it is. but my question is can a carbs get to much air? cause i have tryed to run after the carbs being rebuilt i did not put the air cover on it???

That red handle is the primer selenoid. The red handle should be point to the back of the motor. If you turned that handle where it points down towards the lower unit that bypasses the carbs and sends fuel straight into the cylinders.

So from what I gathered you rebuilt the carbs.
And now assuming you are turning the red handle down the motor runs better.
You still have a fuel issue.
whether it be the carbs or between fuel pump and carbs.

If you have to squeeze the primer bulb to make it run properly, you should check your fuel pump and see if it is pumping fuel properly.

ok if the oiling systeam is bypassed will that make it not have fuel? cause i just put 50 to 1 in the gas? but how do u test the fuel pump?

still havent got the motor running right, we gave up on it for that day and unlocked the steering cable on buds big boat and took it out instead....
if anyone has any other info it would be greatly appreciated, i can get a racecar runnin good, but cant get a little outboard runnin right it really irritates me

Ok I will ask the question.

What makes you think it isn't running right?
What is it doing?
What is it not doing?

Telling us it its not running right does not give us any symtoms.
We need to know as much about the issue as possible.

Etc..... Running Rough, Backfire, sputtering, so for and so on.

it will only run when you have it on full choke just as soon as you let the choke go it dies, also the primer ball will not get hard?

Give you a couple of places to start. Start with this list.

1. Compression all 3 cylinders
2. Spark Test will it jump a 7/16 gap and be blue
3. Fuel Delivery to Carbs (Are Floats Adjusted Correctly)
4. Check Breaker Points Gap is Correct
5. Timing is Correct

Okay if the primer ball will not get hard there is a couple of things to check.

1. Make sure the that the valves are working in the bulb.
If it is old might as well replace from the tank to the engine.

2. Make sure you are not flooding the engine with fuel.
Check float adjustments on carbs.
Make sure all butterflies are completely closed.

3. Make sure you are not sucking any air on any connections in the engine.
Make a spray bottle of premix. Spray around the outside edges of the
carbs and make sure there is no air leaking in.
Take premix and spray into the carbs to try and keep it running with the
choke off. If you can do that then it is going to be the carbs.

replaced squeeze ball and the line from the tank to the motor sprayed carbs around with pre mix no change. did a compression check 110 psi per cyl. now what to check for?

Results so far

1. Compression all 3 cylinders (110 PSI)

2. Spark Test will it jump a 7/16 gap and be blue
3. Fuel Delivery to Carbs (Are Floats Adjusted Correctly)
4. OOPS No Breaker Gap on 87. Make sure your timerbase is moving smoothly
5. Timing is Correct

You need to do these in order to try and help you out.

i wish it was a 78 model, had a 78 johnson 140 thing never gave us a lick of problems
