Just looked through my OMC bible and found a pic of a 68 55 horse, the top of the hood above the logo is white and the rest is that nice light blue.

I repainted mine last year and found Duplicolor at Autozone that was really close to factory color, of coarse for about 4x as much you can get actual OMC paint.

If you are going to repaint and you want it to last and look nice strip it down, when I did mine I found alot of the paint looked good but wasn't really stuck to anyhting, I used a paint scraper to get all the lose stuff off then sanded what was still stuck really well.

I hung mine from the rafters in the garage and took the motor mount off to get it cleaned up really well.

Webshots has old motor pics:

Johnsons had a dark green lower unit with a white fiberglass hood. Evinrudes were blue during that time period, except for the high performance models, which were gold.

Here's a link to proper paint: http://www.nymarine.ca/colours.html

He also carries the decals. Duplicolor works well, but if you want to be a stickler about exact color match, it won't be right.

Be sure to prime bare metal with a self-etching primer or the paint will peel. NAPA sells primer and its cheaper than NY marine. Also, if your cowl has decals on it, remove them with acetone before you repaint.

Thanks folks, I found the white paint while stripping the cover down. I went ahead and took it all the way to the fiberglass. One more question.. I have the 20 and the seahorse emblem cleaned off now and they are chrome. Were they painted or chrome?....Roy

Your engine cover was from a 1965 or '66 model and your motor looks like 1967 green. What is the model number of your engine?

The motor is a 67 and everything is original as far as I know. The white on the hood is the original color, it just has been repainted, everything else is original paint.

The emblems were chrome, highlighted with red and black paint. Look at the side of the cowl in the 3rd pic posted above. It will need to be hand painted, or carefully masked.

I bought the paint to do mine but never got around to it. Rustoleum sells the 8oz cans of enamel (not spray) for the colors needed, at Home Depot. It's the same paint I used to paint the rest of the boat. Or you might try the duplicolor chip repair bottles that have the brush built in. Work fairly well on my truck chips, I got it at autozone.

The lower part of your engine hood is French Silver which Johnson used on their 1961 through 1966 outboards. '67 was the first green color motor and the hood was green where yours is French Silver.

You are correct. My memory is slipping fast. Mine cowling did have green on the lower part and when I repainted it I did the entire thing white.
