WHY did my voltage regulator melt??????

93 60hp merc experiencing engine problems last week started cutting out and
died, let cool down and ran fine till it got hot again. Took cover off coil, switchbox, voltage reg area and the regulator is melted bad , drained all in bottom of motor cover area, and dripped over on bottom coil. what caused this are my coils damaged you think . i am replacing voltage regulator.

test the stator as well but it could be that just the regulator went .

anyone know how i would test the stator and coils also
