Is there any way to get a bit more performance form a 50hp Force outboard? Not looking for 80mph or anything but a bit more oomph would be nice.

Re: 50hp Force

If the motor is tuned.
I think the only way would be to change the prop.

the motor is probably a bit small for the boat..it is a 16 ft Silverline bowrider.

A little underpowered? Most boats that size have a 70-90 horse engine. If you are getting 5500-6000 rpm, that is the best that you can get. Changing the prop will do nothing but load up the engine causing more carbon to form which will decrease your power.

I'm assuming you are getting about 25 MPh? Is that about right?

Re: 50hp Force

So how fast are you able to max out at? I have a 16' Pipestone Mariner (fiberglass) with a 50hp Force. With two people inside and with my current pitch prop[10"] I max out at 23 mph @ 5400 rpm.

As far as getting max performance, fresh fuel, de-carb the motor, change sparkplugs, and keeping your hull clean and free of build up will get the best.

I have a 17" Bayliner Bowrider w/force 50hp. I get 24 mph with 2 adults and 2-4 kids. Tubing is another thing. Slows way down trying to pull somebody.

Tuned meaning, good plugs, clean wires, Fuel filter (If you have one)
Timing set correctly. Things like that.

Well Big Daddy, all I can say is save your pennies and get a bigger engine.

All kidding aside, there are some really good buys on ebay motors where you can get a boat/ motor combo for cheap money. If you find an engine you want, buy the combo and give the boat to a charity.

Re: 50hp Force

I just picked up a Bayliner Capri 14ft with what appears to be a well running 50hp Force. I was a bit surprised how slow the boat appeared to be. Granted my othe boat is a 17ft trihill with a 110hp... So would 25-30mph with a Force 50 on a 14ft Capri sounds right? The boat came with 2 props.

Re: 50hp Force

Bayliners are heavy for their size. Additionally, the sequential lift hull is a compromise and doesn't help matters. 25MPH would be about right depending on your prop pitch.

Don't expect great hole shots with wakeboards cause you will be dissapointed.

Even with all their drawbacks, Bayliners are very seaworthy and a good buy for the buck. ;)
