fuel guage sending unit

I need to install a new sending unit and have a kinda dumb question. I have all the parts I need but I am not sure if I need to use any gasket sealant such as permatex on the gasket . This is exposed a bit in the bilge area . Any thoughts?

nope no sealant.... just the gasket

Thanks for your quick reply. I was worried because the problem started with the old gasket going bad and water entering the fuel tank...there was no sending unit..just a cover and gasket...with a 1/2 inch pipe leading up so you could check the fuel level manually..previous owner made that rig up...worked except now that I see what he did looks like he made all the stuff including the gasket...I had the gas tested and it was 50% water!!

Permatex is soluable in gasoline. It will just wash off and contaminate the gasoline.
