Re: 1958 evinrude lightwin 3hp how to test timing

There isn't any timing to set. If you have spark, and the flywheel is on correctly, it is timed correctly.

The motor needs good compression, spark, and fuel.
Is gas actually getting to the carb? Pull the fuel line and see of gas runs out with the fuel shut-off and tank vent open

The 1958 model was designed for a gas:eek:il ratio of 16:1, but BRP now suggests 20:1

Re: 1958 evinrude lightwin 3hp how to test timing

Unless you have the spark plug wires swapped, it is impossible for the timing to be off. Putting the lever on the "start" position automatically sets the timing.

OK, you know it has fuel. Does it have enough compression?

i havent tested the compression with tester i will do that in the morning.
with the spark plugs out it seems to have quite a bit of compression

wot should the compression b?

thanks for your help :)

hi i have tested the compression and its ok
still wont start

are you 100% sure that it dosent need timing because if i was to put new points on how would i set them up and there is timing marks on flywheel 1 big notch and 1 small notch on oppsit sides and two lines on base

When you install new points, you set them for a 0.020" opening when the cam lobe is at the highest point under each point's rub block. The flywheel is keyed to the crankshaft with a woodruff key and is not moveable.

Re: 1958 evinrude lightwin 3hp how to test timing

Those holes are the exhaust relief. Some exhaust is supposed to come out there. So that is not a symptom.

You say you have spark. But how much spark?? Will it jump a 1/4" gap? And what were the compression readings?

Obviously, there is something that you are passing off as OK, that is not OK. There is no excuse for doing "loads of pulls". That motor should start easy. All we can do from a distance is use the clues that you supply and then make an educated guess.

hi the test shown 50 i used a car tester dont know if that is ok:confused:

i messed about with the points last nite and now i have lost the spark:mad:

but when i did have the spark i dont think it jump a 1/4" gap

can you tell me wot i need to do if i was to put new points in then that might get the spark back

thank you for all your help

james:)

Clean and reset/regap the points to .020, a business or note card saturated with carb cleaner makes a good final points cleaner. Insert it when the gap is open, close the gap and gently pull it out. What kind of replacement plug wires did you use? It needs solid wire core plug wires, not wires from an auto parts store. Sounds like you don't enough spark to fire it off.

50 psi compression is not enough. It should have 75-80. You may have a blown head gasket. And obviously, you need to get the spark back.

on the cam lobe it has TOP stamped on with a line either side do i need to be on 1 of the line or in middle of the two?

my plug wires are not solid wire core would that make a big difference?

the gasket looks ok (clean) i will get a new one to be sure

were is the best place to get the parts?

and how much touque do i use on head bolts?

Yes, the spark plug wire MUST be the the solid (wire) core.
Gasket available here at iboats:

Original OEM number is 0203130

Did you replace your plug wires with solid core? As noted above, you MUST have solid core wires. Automotive wire will NOT work. Absolutely, positively will not work.
