motor is 63' 28hp i just replace a lower unit that worked fine with anotherone of unknown condition in order to make it a long shaft i this one had a spacer, shift rod extension and a longer main drive gear. is it safe to say that the unit i put on was previously damaged or is it possible i did something wrong? it can be shifted into all 3 positions it doesnt feel like anything is binding but it doesnt engage the foreward gear. maby i can use the original lower unit with the spacers and extensions

The screws that hold the shift rod in the connector have to be completely removed in order for the sections of the shift rod to be correctly inserted. Then when the screws are reenserted, they will fit and hold the grooved area of the shift rod sections at the correct position for shifting.

Can you shift the gearcase with it off the motor? If so, then you would have to adjust your shift linkage to the gearcase.

Re: wont shift into forward gear

well i took my boat out for the 2nd test run and yet more lower unit problems - no reverse this time:confused: and forward kinda worked, i think i was in forward gear but wasnt going fast, it barley seemed to be getting 1/4 throttle even thought i was giving it full throttle. i think it was still half in neutral maby. i also notice that in the neutral position there was a clicking sound would that indicat that it wasnt half stuck in gear? on top of that i developed electrical problems and i think i fried a coil shed died on me and i had to get towed back to the launch. just when i though i had everything working properly

Sounds like you can adjust the shift issue out. The shift handle on the motor has two screws on it that can be loosened to adjust it on the shift shaft. And there is no "half in neutral". It's either in gear, or not. If you're barely moving with full throttle, the prop is either fouled (seaweed, trash, etc.) or the hub is spun.

As for the coil - you have two, one for each cylinder. This could also be your power issue if one coil was misfiring and running on one cylinder to start with and you later lost the second resulting in no running at all. Time to pull the flywheel and check things out...

Re: wont shift into forward gear

one of the coils (an older one that hadnt been replaced in a while) was blown it was shattered and peices everywhere as for running on 1 cylinder to begin with i hope not, and i dont think it was because both coils where good before i ran the motor. the black wire from the coil was shorting out on another wire i think the green batery wire that could be the cause of the starter not engaging as well.

the shift cable isnt hooked up right now i lost a part for that i have to **** it at the motor. right now if its in gear and i spin the prop it spin the flywheel . if the hub was spun as you say, how would i tell? as i said before this lower unit is unknown condition i have another one that i know works and was on the motor before but its short shaft. i may have to put that one back on

Easiest check for a spun hub is to mark the hub (bronze part) and the propeller with a Sharpie, run the motor in gear, and see if your marks are still aligned.
