Strange Electrical

i have a 1986 5.7 OMC Cobra. After completing a valve job, now the engine wont shut off. I have 5.0 volts continually on the 'bat' side of the coil as soon as the battery is connected. The wires on the back of the ignition switch labled 'I' (ignition), when disconnected from the switch are hot so i dont think the ignition switch is bad. Any ideas?

Bad diode in the Alt is a possability backfeeding the ign system

could have put the 2 wire plug on the wrong way on the alternator as well the lock clip breaks sometimes and people put them on backwards
